Ha ricevuto il premio Nobel per l’Economia nel 2021. È professore di Economia presso l’Università della California, Berkeley. Le sue ricerche riguardano l’immigrazione, i salari, l’istruzione e le differenze legate al genere e all’etnia nel mercato del lavoro. Ha ricevuto numerosi premi, tra cui il John Bates Clark Prize nel 1995. È stato Presidente dell’AEA.
Nel 1995 è stato co-autore del libro Myth and Measurement: The New Economics of the Minimum Wage e co-curatore dei libri: Small Differences that Matter: Labor Markets and Income Maintenance in Canada and the United States (1992); The Handbook of Labor Economics (1999) e Seeking a Premier Economy: The Economic Effects of British Economic Reforms (2004).
