The Indo-Pacific and the Future of the World: A Geopolitical Perspective
On Tuesday 3 September, the Perth USAsia Centre collaborated with the Italian Consulate in Perth to host a public lecture by Mr Dario Fabbri, Founder and Editor in Chief of leading Italian review DOMINO.
In recent years, European countries have started to recognise the global significance of the Indo-Pacific. That has led to countries like Italy boosting their engagement with Australia in the region.
In recent weeks, Italian aircraft carrier the ITS Cavour participated for the first time in the Australian Air Force’s biannual exercise “Pitch Black.”
Italy’s presence in this exercise so far from the Mediterranean follows the visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to India last year, Italy’s hosting of the G-7 in June, and joint Italian, British and Japanese efforts to develop future long-range aircraft. These developments and many more are seen to be part of an “enlarged Mediterranean” in which Italy’s interests are best served by expanded cooperation beyond Europe.
