“Gli ateniesi, che erano in guerra contro Sparta, volevano costringere gli abitanti della piccola isola di Milos, da sempre alleata di Sparta e rimasta neutrale fino a quel momento, ad allearsi con loro. Invano gli abitanti di Milos, di fronte all’ultimatum degli ateniesi, invocarono la giustizia, implorarono la pietà, in nome dell’antichità della loro città. Siccome non vollero cedere, gli ateniesi rasero al suolo la loro città, fecero strage di tutti gli uomini, vendettero come schiave tutte le donne e tutti i bambini. Le righe in questione sono messe in bocca da Tucidide a questi ateniesi, che iniziarono con il dire che non avrebbero nemmeno provato a dimostrare che questo ultimatum fosse giusto.” (Simone Weil)
