Tra i libri più venduti del sedicesimo secolo, e certamente tra i più importanti per la diffusione della cultura rinascimentale al di fuori del contesto italiano, un posto d'onore spetta al Cortegiano di Baldassarre Castiglione. Fin dalla prima edizione, stampata da Aldo Manuzio a Venezia nel 1528, il trattato dell'umanista e diplomatico di origini mantovane ha attirato l'attenzione di nobili, studiosi e scrittori di tutta Europa proponendo un modello di comportamento ideale per "uomini di corte e dame di palazzo". Ma la sua popolarità ha conosciuto alti e bassi con il passare del tempo: sono cambiati i valori sociali, ne sono state fatte diverse letture e molteplici sono state le sue influenze sulla storia della letteratura. Sull'alterna fortuna del libro del Castiglione lo storico britannico Peter Burke (Le fortune del Cortegiano) si confronta con l'italianista ed esperto di Rinascimento Emilio Russo (Studi su Tasso e Marino).
