Il Broletto di Milano è luogo centrale della città – nel Medioevo definita “fogna degli eretici” – per i traffici mercantili e finanziari.
Meno note sono altre attività che vi si svolgevano quali l’insegnamento dell’abaco e della contabilità ai banchieri cittadini. Il maestro Amedeo Landi di Venezia viene assunto dal Comune per svolgere questa mansione. In occasione di una predica quaresimale frate Bernardino da Siena accusa pubblicamente il maestro di eresia.
La città diventa così il palcoscenico di uno scontro tra interessi dell’economia e repressione della ‘disobbedienza’.
