J. W. Goethe per tutta la vita aveva riflettuto sulla metamorfosi come paradigma della vita e "dottrina della forma". Music for 18 musicians, uno dei grandi capolavori della musica del XX secolo, è una composizione di Steve Reich che prevede l'impiego di quattro pianoforti, un imponente set di percussioni, voci femminili, archi e legni. Un ininterrotto fluire di musica incandescente e gioiosa si dipana tra impercettibili processi di metamorfosi di melodie e ritmi. Per citare ancora Goethe: "qualcosa di mobile, di diveniente, di trapassante".
