Come l’Italia rurale diventa preda del consumismo e vede lo spazio pubblico colonizzato dal potere dei nuovi media, così la società portoghese, ancora alle prese con la costituzione di un modello sociale post-dittatoriale, si apre, ancor più che ai modelli politici occidentali, all’omologazione consumistica. Anche per Gil, come per Pasolini, i nuovi modelli economico-politici sono forse più totalitari di quelli precedenti, in quanto pretendono che non siano concepibili altre ideologie se non quella del consumo.
