Tutte le città gli hanno tributato omaggi di ogni tipo: monumenti, feste, celebrazioni. Ma sono state soprattutto la sua città natale, Firenze, e quella dove morì e dove si trova la sua tomba, Ravenna, ad aver fatto a gara per legare il loro nome a Dante. Una lotta di campanili che si è intrecciata con la grande storia nazionale.
