Alisia ha undici anni, un padre che la vuole sacerdotessa della Dea e un animo indomito. Quando si ritrova al cospetto di un essere mai visto, enorme, che le genera timore e affetto, capisce che è arrivato il momento di lasciare il suo mondo. Grazie all’accoglienza del vecchio Naravas, Alisia si finge maschio e diventa Airos, l’aiutante del guardiano degli elefanti. I pachidermi fanno parte di una spedizione che cambierà le sorti della Storia: il valico delle Alpi di Annibale e dell’esercito cartaginese. Alisia ha una guerra dentro di sé, ma scopre di volere la pace. Per sé stessa, per Naravas e per Aua, l’elefantessa di cui vorrebbe diventare cavaliere.
