Malgrado le spudorate pretese del titolo, frutto di un'incoscienza di gioventù, il libro non è né vuole essere un saggio filosofico e neanche letterario. Parla sì anche di Walter Benjamin e di cose di cui egli ha parlato - di fotografia soprattutto - ma va inteso come un esperimento di memoria ovvero di fotografia della mente. È stato pensato a lungo, quanto a lungo non importa né saprei dirlo con certezza, ma la sua stesura è durata in effetti ventuno giorni soltanto. Un tempo deciso in partenza, come il tempo di esposizione quando si scatta una foto.
