Jan è un bambino come tanti, che va a scuola negli anni Ottanta. L’unica cosa che lo distingue dagli altri bambini è una straordinaria immaginazione. Diventa grande e viene chiamato a prestare il servizio militare poco prima della disgregazione della Jugoslavia. Quando il Paese crolla, crolla anche la porta della camera, il luogo dell’infanzia e della fantasia. Il giorno in cui finì l’estate è un romanzo di formazione ed è il primo romanzo sloveno che rievoca il periodo in cui la Slovenia era in procinto di ottenere l’indipendenza.
