Al Maghtas, il luogo del battesimo di Gesù

L’evangelista Giovanni indica il luogo del battesimo di Gesù come “Betania al di là del Giordano”. Dal I secolo d.C., molti credenti hanno visitato il luogo originale del battesimo: le loro testimonianze parlano di varie strutture, anche se le descrizioni non sono sempre coerenti o precise. Nel corso del tempo, eventi storici, conflitti bellici e disastri naturali hanno contribuito al declino del sito. Solo nel 1970, dopo lo storico trattato di pace tra Israele e Giordania, è stato ripristinato l’accesso al sito battesimale. Questo ha permesso non solo ai pellegrini di tornare, ma anche alle squadre archeologiche di esplorare l’area. Le loro ricerche hanno confermato i dati precedenti, rivelando i resti di alcune delle prime chiese costruite nel sito. Questi risultati hanno fornito la prova definitiva che la località di Al Maghtas è il luogo autentico del battesimo di Gesù.



The evangelist John refers to the site of Jesus’ baptism as “Bethany beyond the Jordan.” Since the 1st century AD, many believers have visited the original baptism site: their testimonies mention various structures, though descriptions are not always consistent or precise. Over time, historical events, war conflicts, and natural disasters contributed to the site’s decline. Only in 1970, after the historic peace treaty between Israel and Jordan, was access to the baptismal site restored. This allowed not only pilgrims to return but also archaeological teams to explore the area. Their research confirmed earlier records, revealing remnants of some of the first churches built at the site. These findings provided definitive evidence that the Al Maghtas locality is the authentic place of Jesus’ baptism.
